性意义上的cum似乎与拉丁语cum（意为“与……一起”或“与……有关”）（古英语形式的com; 参见com-）没有关联，英语偶尔在合并教区或福利的名称中使用（如Chorlton-cum-Hardy），在流行的拉丁短语中（如cum laude），或作为组合词表示双重性质或功能（如slumber party-cum-bloodbath）。
